About Clean Your Ears

Microsuction is an excellent method for removing troublesome ear wax. Our clinician uses powerful magnification for precise assessment and treatment.

A specialist medical suction unit safely extracts the ear wax without water, making the procedure quick and painless, though it can be noisy.

We recommend using olive oil for at least 3 days before treatment to soften the wax. However, if you’re experiencing discomfort, same-day appointments are available. The oil aids the procedure but is not essential for a successful outcome.

Frequently Asked Questions

Who can have microsuction?
Microsuction is ideal for removing occluding wax, debris, or excessive skin in the ear. This dry procedure is safe for almost everyone, even those who cannot have ear irrigation (syringing) by a GP. With fewer risk factors and a high success rate, microsuction is a highly effective method for ear cleaning.
Do I need to do anything before treatment?
Although not essential, new clients are advised to use ear drops for about 3 days prior. This helps soften dry wax and reduce discomfort. If your ears feel uncomfortable or if the wax is very dry, drops can make the procedure easier. For advice on which drops to use, please contact us to speak with a clinician.
Does microsuction hurt?
Microsuction is generally painless, though pre-existing ear pain may cause some discomfort. Given the sensitivity of the ear canal, our clinicians take great care to avoid causing pain. The suction device can be noisy, which may be uncomfortable for some. Your clinician will discuss this with you beforehand to ensure your comfort throughout the procedure.
Is microsuction safe?
Yes, microsuction is very safe and effective. Our clinician is expertly trained and experienced and uses medical-grade equipment to ensure the best possible outcome for our patients.
What ages can have microsuction?
We are able to treat patients aged 16 and above. While children can undergo microsuction, we do not offer this service for them. If you have concerns about your child’s ear blockage, please consult your GP.
Can anyone have microsuction?
There are some ear-related conditions that can result in you not being able to have microsuction performed. This includes suffering from regular ear infections or having a perforated ear drum. If you are unsure of your eligibility, please get in touch with us and we can discuss your treatment plan.
Can I fly after having microsuction?
Yes, unless you have been advised not to due to other medical reasons.
How long does it take?
The duration of treatment is dependent on the patient’s ear canal condition, such as the size of the blockage and the consistency of the wax. It will also be longer if you have both ears treated compared to just one. Please allow 1 hour for an appointment.
How often can I have microsuction?
You can have microsuction as often as needed. Most clients return yearly, but frequency varies based on wax buildup.
Does wax come back?
Ear wax often reoccurs, making regular removal necessary for many clients to prevent blockage.
What if no wax is found?
If no wax is found during the examination, the clinician will perform a video otoscopy, allowing you to view your ear canal on the screen. They will discuss your symptoms and advise the next steps, which may include a referral to your GP. The consultation fee in such cases is £25. See our cancellation policy for more details.
